How I Use Redue

If you aren't sure where to start with Redue, let me describe how I use it, and maybe that'll spark some ideas.

In my system there are two kinds of routines: the regular ones and the irregular ones. Regular routines are the ones I do on a repetitive cycle. When I first get out of bed I'll run through my Morning routine, and before going to bed I'll run through my Evening routine. Similarly, I have a routine for when I start and stop working for the day.

Example of morning routine.

Everything in Morning got there because at one point I forgot to do it, and the inconvenience that caused made me not want to forget it again. This is the state of the list after a refresh on a Monday morning. Those two that remained in the complete section are special. Refill pill container only needs to happen on Sundays, so it's set to only reset then. In the same vein, I usually only need to refill the beans in my coffee machine twice a week, so it only resets on Saturdays and Wednesdays.

A good example of an irregular routine is my Travel checklist.

Example of irregular routine

I don't reset this one on any regular interval. Just when I'm on my way out somewhere, and then again on my way back. This one also demonstrates other handy features of Redue:

  • sometimes you want to inject a task into your routine temporary, like pack the birthday gift for the person you're travelling to see. In my routine I have this set to repeat once, and then on next rest it'll dissapear.
  • sometimes you want to ignore a task this time around, like if you're leaving the laptop you usually bring behind. You can pause tasks to temporarily remove them from your routine without having to actually remove them (and thus not needing the remember to re-add them!).

If you've never really been onto the checklist hype-train, I'd suggest starting with this one. Travel is right in the cross section of something you do irregularly enough won't remember everything you need to grab every time.
